Girl Power: When Ladies Take the Lead in Popping the Question
Apr 03, 2019 12:40 PM Back
While I personally think there’s a lot to say about good old fashioned tradition and convention, I am also (as by my Gemini nature) one for progress, innovation and outside the box thinking. So, when it comes to love, marriage, modern sentimentality I remain a sucker for a heartwarming love story, while also advocating for couples combining and hyphenating their last names and ladies taking the lead. Marriage is about an equal union of two and so both should be equally involved in this major milestone. But, marriage also means not only taking the other’s hand, but taking charge where the other may be weak and that includes popping the question.
In the past courtships were short and sweet and popping the question was something the guy did relatively quickly and after asking dad for his daughter’s hand…..and usually a pleasant surprise to his fair maiden. Today’s couples commonly date for years seeing each other through the good, the bad and the ugly and supporting each other as they strive toward their respective achievements. In fact, marriage and family planning is part of the courtship curriculum and both know the road they walking toward.
Many couples while they are careful to not throw caution to the wind (since marriage IS serious business) just may consider throwing convention to the wind with the lady taking the lead in proposing. She most likely knows her beau while ready to commit to her (after all they’ve been happily and monogamously committed for years) may understand he may not necessarily be ready to make his intentions publically official….and that mean she may have to be the one to get down on one knee.
Look to be totally transparent, I think it best that the gents do the chasing and the proposing; it gives them a sense of purpose and obligation and “teaches” them about “their role” in the marriage and as providers for their family. However, independent millennials may not mind making the first move (so to speak). And, if you’re one of the mod soon to be Mrs. here are a few tips and tricks to guide you in asking him to tie the knot.
1. Make It Memorable: While your idea of a romantic setting may be a posh and trendy restaurant, an arboretum or while away on an exotic getaway, keep in mind what he may find hot. Think about taking him to his favorite sporting event, making his favorite meal or doing something exciting like indoor skydiving. From the smallest to the biggest gesture it should be something that is meaningful to him and to both of you.
2. Practice What You Preach: Think about planning out your proposal and rehearsing it beforehand, especially if you’re the nervous type. Are you the minimalist type think about sealing your proposal with a K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple sexy)…maybe tune into your favorite tunes or movie and when you exchange kisses and “I Love You’s”, why not just blurt out….”Let’s get married”. It’s all about knowing your man and what he will respond to.
3. Give Him a Token of Your Affection: If he popped the question, you would expect a ring…so make sure you treat him with the same courtesy and respect. Consider presenting with a present that will mark the moment, like a collectible watch (maybe even a set of matching watches to seal and signify your dual commitment), a set of cufflinks (if he’s the type), etc…. and if you want to you can even get down on one knee.
